Fall Prevention 101: Simple Changes to Make the Home Safer

For seniors, a fall can be life-changing, leading to hospital stays and a loss of confidence. The good news is that many falls are entirely preventable with simple changes to the home environment.

The “Light Housekeeping” Safety Checklist:

  • Secure the Rugs: Throw rugs are the #1 trip hazard. Remove them or secure them with double-sided tape.

  • Clear the Walkways: Electrical cords, piles of magazines, and clutter in hallways should be removed.

  • Brighten Up: As eyesight fades, dim rooms become dangerous. Ensure hallways and bathrooms have nightlights or bright bulbs.

  • Bathroom Safety: Install grab bars near the toilet and shower. A non-slip mat in the tub is essential.

  • Keep Essentials Close: Items used daily (cups, glasses, remote controls) should be at waist height so there is no need to climb step stools.

How We Help Our Light Housekeeping service isn’t just about tidying up; it’s about spotting these hazards. We ensure the floor is clear and the environment is safe every time we visit.
